Shownotes

So, this is the second to the last episode before the big hiatus and we were feeling it as you might have been able to tell.  Talking before the podcast we both agreed that we were getting a bit lazy!  so I will try to keep this short staying tru to the motif of the podcast.  Oh, BTW, I have recently read an article about links in seperate windows and it is considered bad form to turn this feature on and the decision to open an article, whether in the same window or in a seperate one, should be made by the viewer.  To open an article in a seperate window just right click the link and in the menu choose open link in a new window or in a new tab.  Here are the links below:

Someone was asking in last

Someone was asking in last weeks podcast what wireless usb dongle works out the box. I have a Netgear WG111 v2 which works perfectly out of the box.

Can you please pass that on to him. Thanks.

Hey Guys. In regards to the

Hey Guys. In regards to the Gnome Druid problem with network manager. The Gnome Druid is basically a wizard widget in Gnome. A next, next, next, finish dialog box. From a fresh Ubuntu 8.04 install with network-manager-pptp, NM displays the dialog (druid) and I can successfully setup a vpn to work.

It sound like he's missing some gnome package that nm-applet would be relying on. I'd probably suggest doing 'apt-get reinstall ubuntu-desktop' to make sure required dependencies are met.

Cheers.

Hey Guys!! It's Tom, the

Hey Guys!!

It's Tom, the almighty dubber of the title to Peter Nikolaidus, and I wanted to comment about the new tool (that I'm pretty sure you've heard about) called Ultamatix.

Here's my rundown:

While the tool has been praised for the long list of software it can install, it has also been criticized by several people on the Internet, for it's ability to corrupt people's Ubuntu installs, for one thing. Here's a trusted link:

http://www.qense.nl/posts/ubuntu-nl-warns-for-ultimatix

You guys can look over the details if you want, but it seems to me that my installs using this program have gone well, nothing has been screwed up this way (for me at least).

My main question to you guys was have you tried or attempted to use ultamatix, on any of your Hardy based systems? If so, how did it go for you?

Thanks and have a wonderful week

Hi Peter and Harlem, Where

Hi Peter and Harlem,

Where have you guys been? I know you said you were going on vacation, but come on, it's been almost 2 months with no show. Did you get kidnapped and sent in for re-education by one of the Mojave Project minions? I know they already got to Jerry Seinfeld. Are we going to have to the day when Fresh Ubuntu podcasts becomes the Fresh Vista podcast?!

Now, more than ever, with Microsoft on the attack we need you guys in our corner. I want to thank you for what you have done so far for the Linux community. This thanks to the whole cast of characters you have had on your show. Harlem, Peter, Peace Penguin, Zerg and that guy from Young Guns and La Bamba, the actor Lou Diamond Phillips. Please keep up the good work!

Hello again - wanted to

Hello again - wanted to correct/edit myself, I am not the "almighty" dubber to Peter as with the title of Open source legend (yes) but am instead the "awesome" dubber of the title to him, thanks.

Just a correction.

Have you guys tried out gOS

Have you guys tried out gOS out yet? I downloaded the latest version 3.0 beta and it looks pretty interesting. It is a distribution based on Ubuntu 8.04.1. They have added Google Gadgets and WINE to their OS by default. There use of Mozilla Prism gives Web applications like Google Mail and Calendar a more desktop look. I have to say I like the green theme they use over the stock Hardy theme.

Now that WINE has crossed the 1.0 release mark, I wonder if Canonical would add it to later releases of Ubuntu. This would help people who have one or two Windows applications they cannot live without. I know Canonical would not get any Stallman points for this. Maybe they could prompt the user during an Ubuntu install if they would like to install WINE. Kind of like they do with the Restricted Driver Manager. They give users the choice to hate freedom or not. I respect the freedom argument, but I think the inclusion of WINE might bring more people off Windows and on to Linux.

By the way, did Peter ever get his World of Warcraft running under WINE?

Yes, the inclusion of latest

Yes, the inclusion of latest WINE into Ubuntu is getting to be more of a hot topic every week.

I sure hope it happens too. Gotta love them WINE gurus.

I guess they are still on

I guess they are still on their hiatus. Anyone tried Google Chrome browser yet? I just listened to the latest Linux Basement and Chad covered the topic. Google does not have a Linux version yet, but the Crossover folks have a version using WINE that you can get for free. There is an Ubuntu package for it in both 32 and 64 bits.
