Shownotes

I guess I shouldn't say much about this podcast and let it speak for itself, which I will. But, I do want to take the time to thank my guests on the show this week. So, a special thanks goes to Chess Griffin of the Linux Reality Podcast, David Yates of the Lotta Linux Links Podcast, and to Jason Watkins of Jays blog and guest host of In the Trenches Podcast. Thanks I had a wonderful time talking linux and really getting good frank conversation about Ubuntu and linux. There is an open standing invitation to each of them to join the show anytime they want (every week? Hehe). Well, that about covers it I will just stop here and let the podcast speak for itself.

Press the read on link to view my thoughts on the Dell and Ubuntu deal. The news about Dell and Ubuntu does not surprise me one bit! There I said it. It was only a matter of time, at least for me. It doesn't surprise me because of many things, for one thing, the "people" wanted it. The anti-parallel of that statement is that the "people" didn't want Windows Vista, at least, not in its current state. Secondly, Linux is maturing into a desktop operating system usable by anyone.

I just read the blog post on the use of the trademark, and frankly, I am a bit concerned. Not just form me but for others like me who have taking such a liking to this distro that they, no WE, decided to become independent advocates. I have recently, just in the past hour, written a letter to the trademark folks at ubuntu and am hoping to get positive results. If not, what will become of all this? As I stated earlier, I wrote to seek permission, and it may take "a week" to get a response. I'll wait patiently and hope for a good outcome. Stay tuned.

It is all over the internet, and you have probably heard by now. EMI will offer DRM free music through iTunes! I am excited and at the same time perplexed by the whole thing. Remember when (you might not be old enough to remember) vinyl gave way to cassettes? You had to buy the same music again but in a different format. The same goes for cassettes to CDs, then CDs to SACD. Then there was Napster and peer to peer networks when you just downloaded something without paying for it. But, that was the beginning of the revolution.

Look, I am as excited about Dells offer to put Linux on a select group of computers that they sell. It ahs been a long time coming, and I think we are finally on the verge of a real revolution here. But, one thing is nagging me since this whole thing started and that is the business side of any major vendor. I will be interested to see how they (meaning Dell, et al) will price their hardware.

There is no such thing as a perfect or completely secure computer operating system. Will the machine be a desktop computer or a server; purpose is a key to understanding how to initially install and configure your Linux PC.
